That set looks atrocious and so dangerous.. It’s hurting my eyes just looking at it. It’s terrible to see and hear what these actors were put through for this stupid train wreck. I literally don’t know why the team thought this was a good idea.

Personally, for me, for how I would've handled a Spider-Man musical Maybe gloss over the origin story and maybe excise the Arachne stuff and you could have a fun musical about Spider-Man like maybe him facing off against Mysterio, Beck would have his efforts to try and mess with Peter and having one bombastic villain song

The thing with Spongebob Squarepants, is in the same vein as the Harry Potter series. Take multitude of other franchises and ideas from the 20th century, put a twist on it, add some comedy, and you got a show that everyone for the next 100 years, well past our lifetime, will continued to endure and love for as long as the broadway show will go, even if the creator of the show passed away and such. Which, while I was never a huge fan of spongebob (I was always a monster lover to be exact), Sponegbob is that type of show, much like how Peanuts did in the 1950s, Calvin and Hobbes and Garfield in the 1980s, and Felix and The Adventures of Gumby & Pokey did in both the 1920s and 1960s, Spongebob is that weird show that you can't help but watch what comes next, and what comes next surprises and shocks the viewer at the end. And to be honest, it's a show that many with ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder) can still enjoy the show and it's pretty much the predecessor for TikTok content in the future (despite I was one of the individuals, yes, even at age 11, that was totally against smartphones because, well, "Who the heck wants to have applications and internet on a phone that was made for calling and texting in the first place, when you literally can bring a laptop/computer at specific places and not have to be glued to social media 24/7?" And yes, this mentality is still with me nearly 17 years later after I heard about the Apple iPhone introduced to the world by the late-Steve Jobs himself.) So while I have not watched this show sadly, I can see the appeal for those who love that show (to which I don't. I was more of "The Wild Thornberries" and "Back To The Future/Bill And Ted" type of person, but that's just me)....Either way, seeing this video helped me understand why people enjoy the musical a lot.

It’s crazy that as the musical was being written, Dan Slott, writer of the Spider-Man comics at the time, bastardized the plot of Spider-Man in the same way, adding the “Web of Life and Destiny” and creating the Spider-Verse, introducing the idea that every universe must have a Spider-Man, it is destined to happen, and more often than not, it’s Peter Parker. Boo.

Into the Woods is one of my top favorite musicals, and I also like Sweeney Todd, not nearly as familiar with his other works. But I do wish we could have seen what might have come of a Sondheim / Lin Manuel Miranda collaboration.

I would be curious about those who love the show versus those who hate it- what people are reacting to that puts them on one side or the other, and why there is hardly any in-between.

Thanks for shedding light on the background of this one. Makes me want to go see it again with the knowledge I now have about this show’s development. I found the show to be entertaining. I liked it. But it was by no means extraordinary. Other shows have featured similar themes (especially on the critique if excess, capitalism, wanting what you can’t have, etc) and did those commentaries a lot better, in my opinion. Here Lies Love talked about those themes, and did so in a way that didn’t seem tired and done before. Which is ironic since Here Lies Love was in the Broadway theatre right before The Great Gatsby was.

The musical seems to be more authentic to the actual time-frame in which the movie was supposed to be based. Mel Brooks was sharing a bit of his life-story from the 1940s/50s. The original movie was adapted to the 1960s, this is obvious in the characterization of the spoof of Hitler. The musical is more like semi autobiographical. I agree that the movie musical didn’t adapt to being a movie. But the movie musical does keep the spirit of the Broadway musical. And that’s important!

It would have been a mistake to try to make the 2005 film like a movie. We already have the 1967 version for that. If anything they should have leaned even more into the broadway version. But mostly they should have tempered their expectations. 2005 wasn't a great time to put out a musical to film.

I saw Ave Q at the Vineyard, and at intermission I thought it was the most refreshing new musical since RENT. On Tony night, not having seen Wicked, I rooted for and was ecstatic that Ave Q won. Months later, after seeing Wicked, I thought to myself: how in the world did this show not win? Both shows are in my top musical list. I have, what I’m guessing, is a relatively rare signed Ave Q off bway poster, framed and in my office.
